Ponds
For over 2000 years or more ponds have been at the hub of much of rural life
providing water for man and his animals, food in form of fish or fowl, power
for mills and foundries and occasionally status symbols for the rich. These
traditional roles have largely disappeared and many ponds have become derelict
or vanished in the face of urban development and agricultural improvement. Between
1882 and 1978, the number of ponds in Hertfordshire almost halved. 80% of the
remaining ponds are in a biologically poor condition. Ponds are an important
habitat for a wife range of aquatic plants and animals.
