Meadows

Natural wildflower meadows are amongst the most attractive and nostalgic of our countryside features. Yet since 1934, more than 96% of Hertfordshire's wildflower meadows have disappeared or now lack any significant wildlife intrest. The colour has been replaced by improving grassland, arable farmland or urban development. This loss has been paralleled by a reduction in the number of plant and animal species naturally associated with these habitats. Many of our native flowers and insects associated with such grassland are now uncommon, such as cowslip and common blue butterfly, whilst many specialist species are in danger of disappearing altogether.
