Species of Hertfordshire

Red fox Vulpes vulpes

Conservation Status: Common

Hertfordshire: Under recorded

Protection: No legal protection

General Information: A highly adaptable and successful animal found in nearly all habitats, even in the centres of cities. They have become increasingly common in many Urban areas since World War II. One of the keys to their success is their willingness to eat anything. Foxes tend to kill excess prey when it is abundant and often bury it for use on days when food is short. They have a range of lying up places, tending to use earths mainly in the breeding season. A powerful foxy smell is often associated with their presence and their droppings resemble those of a small dog with tapered ends and recognisable prey remains.

Threats: A high number of foxes are killed on the road. Foxes are generally controlled by shooting, snaring and hunting. Hunts are not normally an effective means of control.
