Fallow deer Dama dama

Conservation Status: Locally common

Hertfordshire:Mainly recorded from the rural central and northern parts of Hertfordshire.

Protection: Covered by various Acts of Parliament which relate to, firearm restrictions, capture, handling and movement of deer, and the time periods when culling can take place.

General Information: Large, gregarious, woodland deer with many colour variations but typically a chestnut-brown colour with many white spots in the summer and a duller coat with no spots in the winter. The rump is white with a black curved border and the tail has a central black stripe. The upper antlers of the fallow are broad and flattened. They are predominantly grazing animals but will also browse on the taller vegetation of shrubs and trees. The breeding season (rut) is in October and November.

Threats: Road mortalities can be high leading to local extinctions.
