The guide

Engage is a practical guide exploring different ways of engaging the community. Whether you’re just starting to work with your local community or if you’re already a community engagement professional, there’s something in it for everyone.

The information is supported by real examples of successful community engagement activities in Hertfordshire.

We’ve also divided the guide into sections in case you just want to download a particular topic:

Background

This section covers the basics, discussing what community engagement is and what it means to organisations and communities. It also identifies the different levels of community engagement and introduces the ideas of empowerment and capacity building.

Planning

This section looks at things you might consider before you engage with people – for example, personal skills and community needs and expectations. You’ll also find basic information on risk, insurance, health and safety, equality, diversity and funding.

Communities

This section encourages an increased understanding of the diverse communities that live in Hertfordshire. It identifies some of these communities and considers some specific needs they may have.

Techniques

This section explores the methods you can use to engage with people. Most methods are supported by practical information on use as well as their pros and cons, so you can identify the most appropriate technique for you.

Evaluating

This section considers how you might evaluate community engagement and the importance of feeding back to the community.
