Go with the Glow

Walk Ring to Book

Have you ever seen a glow worm? (1.2miles / 2km)

These fascinating insects are usually only seen in the first two weeks of July when the females are glowing to attract a mate. Once they have mated they cease to glow. Come along on this evening walk to search for glowing females on woodland rides. The event is free but booking is essential as places are limited. Please bring a torch. Meeting point details will be given over the phone.

The Butterflies of Prestwick Road Meadows

A gentle walk around Prestwick Road Meadows (2miles / 3.2km)

Join the Countryside Management Service and Butterfly Conservation to discover the butterflies that are attracted to this rich wildflower meadow. The Purple Knapweed, Yellow Birdsfoot-Trefoil and Red Clover create a tall colourful patchwork which attracts all manner of insects. Meet at the entrance to the site along Prestwick Road, South Oxhey.

Practical Task

Ragwort Control - Croxley Common Moor

Join us at this fantastic Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. We will be hand pulling Ragwort to keep it under control and prevent harm to the livestock. Long sleeved clothing is advised for this task. We will also have an opportunity to enjoy the varied wildflowers of this beautiful grassland site. Meet at the site entrance, off Mill Lane and over the Grand Union Canal. Parking is available on the Bywaters housing estate (TQ 085 954).

A circular route through the site of the new Heartwood Forest (12miles / 19.3km)

A meandering, circular route through the new Woodland Trust Heartwood Forest site, via Harpenden Common and Rothamsted, and part of the Nickey Line. Off-road sections. Share a picnic en route (weather permitting!) or enjoy a cosy pub lunch. Bring a picnic or some money for food at the pub. Pulling ragwort and spring clean

Ragwort is a plant that can have potenially fatal consequences for horses and other livestock if it is eaten. To help keep ragwort under control we spray and pull ragwort each year. Come along and help us remove ragwort as well as giving Croxley Common Moor SSSI a bit of a spring clean.

Teddy Bears' Picnic at Aldenham Country Park

Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic!

Bring your old teddy bear (or new one) along to 100 Aker Wood and take part in a mass picnic. Events may include story telling and face painting. If wet on the day it is advisable to wear wellies and suitable clothing. Don’t forget your picnic! To get to the Park, use either A41, A5, or M1 (junction 5). Follow Park signs on nearby roads. The entrance is opposite Haberdashers’ Aske’s School on Aldenham Road. Bus 107 from Borehamwood or W7 from Watford.

This is an opportunity for you to get really close to these wonderful birds and ask all the questions you want: do you know your long-wings from your short-wings?
