Ver Valley meadows interpretation boards

One of the many challenges facing the Watling Chase Community Forest is the necessity to balance the recreational needs of the community, while safe-guarding the land and livelihood of local landowners. The WCCF has its roots firmly in the urban fringe and as a result conflicts can sometimes occur.

The Ver Valley Walk, one of WCCF and west Hertfordshires premier walks, passes through land on the outskirts of St. Albans. The landowner had been effected by high levels of trespass as a result of winter flooding rendering the footpath impassable. However, after waters had subsided walkers were still using the illegal route, causing problems for the landowner.

CMS, in conjunction with the County Council's Rights of Way unit and the Chilterns Chalk Streams Project (the two joint funding partners) took steps to alleviate the problem. By designing and installing three route map and interpretation boards along the section of footpath to clearly define the correct path, we hope to guide walkers across the meadows. Thus reducing their impact and alleviating the pressure on the landowner.
