Ridge bridleway 27 (Packhorse Lane)

bridleway before it was improved

A partnership between Hertfordshire County Council Rights of Way unit, WCCF and Hertsmere Borough Council has enabled the transformation of a very muddy overgrown track at the heart of the Community Forest. During a large part of the year it had only usable by horse riders and in winter it became impassable to all users. The whole of this useful off road link has now been improved. A 3 metre wide surfaced track with half metre natural verges has been provided along the entire length. A ford has been restored and an existing bridge has been widened to provide the option of a dry crossing for riders. Fallen timber and encroaching vegetation has been cleared improving headroom and visibility. Hedgerow management will benefit the local nesting bird population. To complement these works and ensure long term viability Hertsmere B.C. has sponsored ditch clearance and drainage works.

The range of improvements carried out has brought many benefits to a range of users. Horse riders, cyclists and walkers can now use the route in all seasons. Push chair and wheel chair users are now also able to use this path. Along with the pleasures of being able to enjoy a pleasant wooded lane the work has provided scope for a wide range of changes for the better. The option of an off road route has considerable safety implications and connection to a range of sustainable transport routes is now possible. Large urban areas nearby will benefit from access for exercise and health to this greenspace. Installation of bunds at either end will prevent illegal access by vehicles and help reduce a previous fly-tipping problem. Recreational use has also expanded by providing this link to the surrounding network of paths including a promoted cycle route. Local horse riders are so pleased with the result that they have recently requested a store of material for running repairs, which they would use to keep the path in prime condition.
