We have a number of leafleted walks that are aimed at beginners or those walking specifically to improve their health. Find one in your area and give it a go.

The Countryside Management Service (CMS) has been working with communities in Hertfordshire for 30 years, helping them to care for and enjoy the environment.

Wooden it be great to be a Warden...?

The Countryside Management Service (CMS) is inviting volunteers to team up with the Wood Wardens at Broxbourne Woods - Hertfordshire’s only National Nature Reserve - on November 11.

The aim of this special volunteer recruitment day is to give people a taste of conservation activities, including coppicing and making deer baskets - and to give them a chance see what it’s really like to be a Wood Warden.

Wood Wardens meet fortnightly to carry out a range of conservation and access tasks in the woods, from tree felling to constructing bridges, maintaining paths and restoring ponds.

“Whether people have an interest in wildlife, using or learning practical skills, or simply want to get some fresh air and exercise, they’ll find something to suit them at Broxbourne Woods,” said Executive Member for Transport, Environment and Rural Affairs, Stuart Pile.

“One of the great successes of the Countryside Management Service over the years has been in involving people in conservation tasks within their local community. We regularly run events like this, and they are a great way of recruiting new volunteers and raising awareness of the importance of woodland conservation.”

If you want to take part in the recruitment day, meet at 10.00am on Sunday, November 11 at Broxbourne West car park, off Pembridge Lane. You will need to bring a packed lunch but tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Wear sturdy shoes and gardening/old clothes.
