Why winter walks are worthwhile

It's easy to summon enthusiasm for a walk when it's warm but in the winter, getting kitted out for the prevailing conditions takes rather more commitment.
However, there are many good reasons for donning protective layers and boots during the coming months by joining events in the Walks & More programme, which the Countryside Mangement Service helps to organise
For a start, you can often see a lot more of the countryside. As the leaves fall and other vegetation dies back, birds like Robins, Kingfishers and Barn Owls are easier to spot. The contours of the land are more visible too and earthworks caused by man's activities can be detected. It's a great time to pick out archaeological features in the landscape.
If it is cold, walking is an excellent way of warming up. The brisk pace provides the kind of vigorous exercise that gets the circulation going. It helps keep you fit and releases endorphins which make you feel good.
Thirdly, the company is excellent. When you join an event, you'll be mixing with others with similar interests. Many walks finish at or near a pub and there's a chance to socialise there afterwards over refreshments.
In addition, guided walks usually feature several stops along the route where the leader shares his or her knowledge of the area and walks with a theme have an expert in charge. Whatever the time of year, you'll come away with a little more knowledge that you had at the beginning.
Look up the events on www.hertsdirect.org/whatson to find out what's on in the countryside or pick up a copy of the Walks & More booklet at libraries, tourist offices and many Council offices.
- The Countryside Management Service is always looking out for new leaders. If you know an area well or have specialist knowledge of a subject that you could share during a guided walk, please contact derek.turner@hertscc.gov.uk or call 01462 459395.
