Open day at Wayside Farm

1,500 people enjoyed a great day out at Wayside Farm in Kings Langley on Sunday 1st June. They were entertained and informed in equal measure by shire horse, sheep shearing and farm machinery demonstrations, guided walks, local produce, but the stars of the show were the Gaddesden Jersey herd. The event was a joint celebration of Open Farm Sunday and the HCC Rural Estates’ centenary and over £800 was donated to the Herts Air Ambulance appeal.
The aim of the day was to inform people about the business of dairy farming, but also to make people aware of the need to balance the requirements of food production, wildlife and recreation. Officers from Rural Estates, Rights of Way and CMS have been working with Charlie and Barbara Wray, the HCC tenant farmer, to try to find ways to ensure people keep to the public footpaths on the farm, as straying off the paths can cause damage to valuable crops like grass and maize, and it can disturb both livestock and wildlife, especially ground nesting birds.
A big thank you is owed to: Health Walk leaders, Herts Constabulary, Kings Langley Parish Council, Kings Langley Scouts, the local RSPB group, and all the volunteers who helped make the day a big success.
