Countryside Management Service

We have a number of leafleted walks that are aimed at beginners or those walking specifically to improve their health. Find one in your area and give it a go.

The Countryside Management Service (CMS) has been working with communities in Hertfordshire for 30 years, helping them to care for and enjoy the environment.

Wake Up to Wildlife in Three Rivers District!

CMS gave local people an alarm call and the skills needed to discover wildlife that’s all around them.

People in Three Rivers District came out in force at the end of July to share in activities for Local Nature Reserve week. Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) are places for people to enjoy and for wildlife to thrive.

On Chorleywood Common and croxley Common Moor LNRs guided walks on a summers evening drew in a good crowd to look at the different habitats found across the sites. How a balance is maintained through careful management was the theme of the walks. This was a good follow up to bird box building and insect hotel making which took place in the day time on Chorleywood Common with a large group of local children.

More insect hotels were built at Prestwick Road Meadows LNR in South Oxhey with an even larger group of children and parents. These old hay meadows support a fascinating variety of wildlife, and the children leaving with their bee hotels were excited about the prospect of providing homes for wildlife in their own gardens.

At Oxhey Woods LNR, more children on TRDC summer activities came across the CMS volunteer group building a picnic table and benches in the woods. The children were on a Teddy Bears picnic trail, but as CMS forgot to mention to the volunteers that they needed a teddy bear, they weren’t allowed to join in. Luckily this meant they continued to work hard and now the children have a new table to eat their picnics from.
