Volunteers brave the cold

Willing volunteers from Hertfordshire County Council's County Development Unit braved freezing temperatures to join CMS and Welwyn Hatfield Council ranger Jane Worall at Northaw Great Wood, nr Cuffley for a day of practical woodland work. They spent the day coppicing small trees to open up shady ride edges which will allow Jane to access the rides with a mower. This newly created ride edge habitat will provide nectar rich, warm sunlit conditions for invertebtates such as butterflies and wild flowers.
'As minerals and waste planning authority, it is our responsibility to protect and enhance the environment whilst balancing the need for minerals and waste development. Working with the Countryside Management Service re-enforced the importance of this responsibility and we will continue to ensure that biodiversity issues are considered in all applications. The away day was great fun and taking part in the enhancement of the North-South ride was both enjoyable and rewarding'.
