Countryside Management Service

We have a number of leafleted walks that are aimed at beginners or those walking specifically to improve their health. Find one in your area and give it a go.

The Countryside Management Service (CMS) has been working with communities in Hertfordshire for 30 years, helping them to care for and enjoy the environment.

Three new cycle route leaflets

cyclists in hertfordshire

Over the last 12 months Chris Dungate, Anna Kitteringham, Debbie Vidler and Peter Cooke have been involved in a scheme with Countryside Management Service and Groundwork Hertfordshire that involves spending 6 months at each organisation learning and gaining experience in environmental project management.

All four apprentices have been involved in the design process for three new cycling leaflets across Hertfordshire. The three Enjoy Hertfordshire leaflets cover cycling routes in St Albans and the surrounding area, a circular route from Baldock and the third is Hitchin into the Chilterns. The routes can be joined at any stage and will allow riders to discover the countryside, small villages and of course the city of St Albans on one of the routes. With the routes ranging from 6 to 20 miles they are ideal for cyclists of all abilities and there are plenty of pubs or picnic spots enroute to stop at, some with cycle parking facilities.

The project started with Peter and Debbie researching and drafting the information for the text and maps. They had to either improve an existing route or design a completely new route. After Christmas the apprentices swapped organisations and continued each others projects, from there Chris and Anna worked closely with a designer to go through drafts of the leaflet and then organise the printing and distribution of the finished product.

Their apprenticeship is now coming to an end, however there are five new apprentices starting later in June. To find out more about the four apprentices and their experiences of the last year visit www.groundwork.org.uk.
