Cheshunt Park to enjoy £150,000 facelift

Cheshunt Park saw up to ten thousand people attend the annual Festival Of Fireworks on Guy Fawkes night. The crowd had additional cause for celebration this year as the evening marked the start of a programme of work funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Cheshunt Park has been awarded over £113,000 thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Financial support from the Borough of Broxbourne and volunteer contributions raise the total value of the project to over £150,000.
Members of the Friends of Cheshunt Park have suggested a number of ideas to improve their park. In response, a partnership was formed between the friends group, Broxbourne Borough Council and the Countryside Management Service (CMS) to turn their ideas into reality. The partnership has since lifted the park to coveted Green Flag status and the injection of lottery funds means that the dreams of the local volunteers will be realised.
Over the next two years lottery money will deliver a host of improvements and encourage an increase in the number of people visiting and enjoying Cheshunt Park. A new 'easy access' trail and on-site information will encourage people to explore the site and learn more about its fascinating history and importance for wildlife.
The partnership will recreate a community orchard, planted with traditional apple and pear varieties that were once more common to the County. Local people will have the chance to get involved with the planting and future care.
A number of projects will improve the park for wildlife, including: improvements to management of the meadows, pond de-silting and hedgerow restoration. The conversion of World War Two pill boxes will provide a refuge for bats.
Work will start this autumn, why not get involved and enjoy the ‘fruits of your labour’?
