Better Walks Around Buntingford

With its dense network of paths and gentle slopes, the Buntingford area is worth considering for a walk in the countryside. Now, a new footpath guide from Buntingford's Parish Paths Partnership members makes a visit even more enjoyable.
'Discover the countryside around Buntingford' includes a map of public rights of way between the town and the neighbouring villages of Aspenden, Throcking, Chipping, Wyddial and Hare Street. To help you find your way around, prominent features like woods, roads, churches and power lines are shown and every field boundary has been carefully checked and marked. Walking can build up an appetite, so village pubs are located too. Three circular routes suggest walks of three to five miles to try and illustrations show some of the wildlife and plants that you might see while you're out.
County Councillor Stuart Pile, attending the launch of the leaflet on 13 July, thanked Bob Jackson who devoted many hours to designing the leaflet. Councillor Pile also spoke of the team effort that local people had made. 'Before the leaflet came out, they surveyed all the routes and improved many of the paths by removing six redundant stiles, replaced other stiles with gates, added waymarks at 30 path junctions and levelled out a steep slope'.
The Countryside Management Service provided tools, materials and supervision. Other work was organised by the Rights of Way Officer at Hertfordshire County Council which also helped to fund the leaflet and Buntingford Town Council gave further support. Buntingford Civic Society also contributed to the cost and its members are distributing the leaflet to every household in the town. Further copies are available from Tourist Information at Buntingford Town Council offices and from Buntingford library.
