Dacorum

The Dacorum Health Walk Scheme was set up in 2002 when a partnership was formed with Dacorum Borough Council, CMS, the Primary Care Trust and Dacorum Council for Voluntary Service. Funding was secured from the Countryside Agency through the Walking the Way to Health Initiative (WHI). With a great deal of support from Dacorum Borough Council the first lead walks started out in Markyate and Gadebridge Park. Then with further funding from WHI in place, a part time officer was employed to build upon the scheme. Funding from WHI ceased in January 2006 and the co-ordination of the scheme was integrated into CMS core work. The volunteer leaders have been integral in keeping the scheme going, meeting regularly, devising new routes and organising their own rotas.

Harpenden

The Harpenden Health Walk scheme has been running for eight years and was the first one to be set up in Hertfordshire! The partnership for the scheme includes volunteer walk leaders, West Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust, Countryside Management Service and Harpenden Town Council. Harpenden Health Walks have progressed from only a few volunteers and walks to 14 actively trained walk leaders and 19 individual walk routes.

Hertsmere

Health walks in Hertsmere have been running successfully for a number of years, the first of which was launched in Borehamwood in 2003. This scheme was closely followed by similar schemes in Radlett and Bushey. These walks were launched in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertsmere Primary Care Trust, Fifty Plus, the Countryside Management Service and a team of dedicated volunteers who lead walks and devise new routes.

St Albans

The St Albans Health Walks were set up with walks around Highfield Park in June 2007 following numerous requests for a Scheme in St Albans and an identified need in the Camp area. The Scheme has since expanded to include a route in Verulamium Park. The Scheme has been set up in partnership with St Albans District Council who has provided funding along with Hertfordshire County Council. It is early days and is hoped that it will grow within St Albans to include more venues.
