View a map of Nomansland and the proposed fencing
Nomansland is a popular area for dog walkers, kite flyers, model planes and horse riders, along with families who enjoy a picnic on a Sunday afternoon. The reintroduction of grazing should have little impact for these users. The heathland on the north side of Ferrers Lane is some of the best in south Hertfordshire. It continues to support a wealth of rare plants including dwarf gorse and heather that have been here for hundreds of years. Perhaps more importantly rare insects that are associated with heathland can still be found there, including rare grasshoppers, butterflies and bees. On many former heathland sites, there simply isn’t enough habitat for these specialist creatures to survive.
The proposed fence line would follow the boundary of the Common with the farmland to the south and alongside the track through the woodland to the north. Cattle grids would be placed on Ferrers Lane to prevent the animals straying onto the main road, and a speed restriction would be investigated. To get an idea of how it may look, an area of this size may support up to fourteen cattle for three months.
Access gates will be provided at all currently used paths as shown. If you think there should be more pedestrian gates or other access points, please let us know.
